I just found out about the Love Vibe on a whim that Malletech would be putting out a vibraphone by now. I heard it played on You Tube. The sound is gorgeous and would rival anything past or present including vintage Deagans and that is saying something. How much do they cost?

Mirage would also be a really cool piece to play, yes. I’m actually not sure if I’ve heard Rain Tree…. Should probably check it out.

I think more or less any Abe piece would do. I was listening to Memories of the Seashore the other day, and it too is a really beautiful little piece.

Hi Anders and thanks for the comment and great suggestions. You are right about Marimba Spiritual, such a funky piece. What about Mirage (Sueyoshi) and Rain Tree (Takemitsu). Couldn’t these balance nicely together with more tonal/modal pieces such as the Abe? As far as Abe pieces: surely surely Blossom and Variations Children’s Songs are perhaps the best?

I’ve been thinking about this for days now. It’s really difficult, especially because I think if you put a lot of the Japanese contemporary pieces together in one concert, it could end up being kind of monotonous…

But I would definitely play Convergence I (Yoshihisa) and The Source (Ichiyanagi).
Maybe Torse III (Miyoshi).

And of course, a few Keiko Abe pieces in between: Dream of the Cherry Blossoms, Marimba d’Amore, Michi.

Also, if I was to play a concert with just Japanese music, I would play Marimba Spiritual, whitch is just one of the greatest pieces ever. (I know, it’s for four players, but I don’t care!)

There’s a lot of really standard marimba pieces in there, but I do think this would make a really great concert, and it would show a lot of different sides of the Japanese marimba tradition.

Hi! You should check out the percussion concerto “Das War Schön”, by the Norwegian composer Rolf Wallin. If I remember correctly, it’s written for vibes, marimba plus some almglocken and crotales. There’s a recording on Naxos.

Other than that, I don’t really know many pieces for vibraphone…

i used to be a reasonably fast drummer but the exhaust on my car started playing up and so now i take it down a notch. plus i got a speeding ticket the other day on the M1

good lord i is eating a curry and these boys are putting me off my food. in that that opening solo it looks like he’s about to shit himself, not good in white trousers. and why the blindfolds? is that so they can just pay them a rehearsal fee instead of a gig without them knowing? it looks like a full audience but then again with that many drummers on stage they only need half a gran each to fill the place. the whole thing looks like tap dogs meets premier, can’t think of anything worse.

now where do i book tickets………

John, i am sorry you even considered for a few seconds that I was bitching on WFD. Far from it! And in case you don’t know, I am going through my WSM phase (world’s slowest marimbist). I only do adagissimos. But April will be my fast month: so let’s do a competition: where do you live? Bring you drumometer and fast chops! :-p

HAHA! great post. I have been hearing about this WFD stuff for years now. At first I thought it was just crap till I found out Dr. Gleenie was really into it. That’s right check out http://www.drumometer.com go to word from the pros. Paul Werico says my position the best. I think it is easy to say the WFD is crap till you check it out. Then it’s the shit!

You do need to try the four mallets, but seriously do you really think you are faster than Dr. Gleenie?
